Bushido Ju-Jitsu Dojo

A Gentle Art that Thrives on Manipulation through Minimum Effort using Locks, Strikes and Throws

Ju-jitsu translates as a gentle art. Although the techniques are designed to cause pain and can look scary to some, Ju-jitsu is actually about controlling the opponent with minimum effort. Locks, strikes and throws are just some of the skills of Ju-jitsu.

About Ju-Jitsu

The written history of Ju-jutsu dates to 710 – 794. The Samurai used Japanese old-style Ju-jitsu in battle as it was the most effective way of an unarmed or lightly armoured warrior to fight an opponent by attacking joints using the weak points of their armour. Ju-jitsu is known as the mother art and judo, aikido and karate are born from it.

What’s Bushido Ju-Jitsu about?

About Bushido Ju-Jitsu

We practice a modern style of Ju-jitsu which has been designed to be a complete and effective self-
defence system. The style of Bushido Ju-jitsu is not about learning to be be the ultimate fighter. The object is to train the student to competently deal with almost any attack, including attacks by more than one assailant, defences against knife attacks, and defences against a stick or club.

Methods of combat

These include locks, strikes (kicks and punches), various takedowns, trips, throws (body throws, shoulder and hip throws, unbalance and leg-sweeping throws), restraining (pinning, grappling and wrestling) and weaponry. Defensive tactics include blocking, evading, off-balancing and escaping (to name just a few!).

Progressive Steps

Initially, we use little movement to teach the body and brain to relax and move in a way that will prevent injury. The novice will learn stance and self-assurance, to be relaxed yet alert in the face of danger. Next, we learn to react to an attacker and defend ourselves from different kinds of attack. As the range of movement increases and we improve our techniques, we learn to move our body to throw our attacker off balance. After about a year of training you will be able to see a technique, break it down into its component parts, and put your own mark upon it. At this stage you will begin to develop your own style. An experienced student of Ju-jitsu will be ready to respond in any situation, regardless of the attack type.
